Hej där! Welcome to week 5 of Couch Culture Club, we’re off to Sweden.

Famous for Ikea, the Northern Lights, its awe-inspiring natural landscapes and incredible cuisine, this weeks Couch Culture Club destination is Sweden!

What could be better on a winter weekend-in then some warm mulled wine and Swedish meatballs? Accompanied by an award-winning, Swedish film ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Get ready for the perfect cosy night in soaking up some Swedish culture.

Swedish Meatballs

INGREDIENTS

  • 500g ground beef

  • 1/4 cup panko bread crumbs

  • 1/4 tsp. ground allspice & ground nutmeg

  • Large onion finely chopped

  • ½ tsp. Garlic Powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp. olive oil

  • 5 tbsp. butter

  • 3 tbsp. flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp. Dijon mustard

  • Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

In a medium sized bowl combine beef, panko, allspice, nutmeg, onion, garlic powder, pepper, salt and egg. Mix until combined.

Roll into 12 large meatballs or 20 small meatballs. In a large skillet heat olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Add the meatballs and cook turning continuously until brown on each side and cooked throughout. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil.

Add 4 tablespoons butter and flour to skillet and whisk until it turns brown. Slowly stir in beef broth and heavy cream. Add worchestershire sauce and dijon mustard and bring to a simmer until sauce starts to thicken. Salt and pepper to taste. Add the meatballs back to the skillet and simmer for another 1-2 minutes.

 
 
Drink

Glögg, swedish mulled wine

ingredients

  • 2 x Bottles red wine

  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds

  • 4 cinnamon sticks, plus more for garnish

  • 4 star anise pods, plus more for garnish

  • 2 orange slices

  • 1 10cm knob ginger, peeled and chopped

  • 8 orange twists, (for serving)

  • Optional 1 1/2 cup bourbon or vodka

Method

Combine wine, sugar, caraway seeds, cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, orange slices, and ginger in a large pot. Bring to a simmer and reduce heat to low. Let steep for one hour. Strain and divide among mugs; garnish with cinnamon stick, star anise pod and orange twist.

It tells the story of a disgraced journalist’s investigation in Stockholm to find out what happened to a woman from a wealthy family who disappeared 40 years prior.
